A little over three months ago I was given the opportunity to try out the Bio-Oil Multiuse Skincare Oil which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil, which is meant to be highly effective for skin concerns, such as aging skin and dehydration. This product, I am sure needs no introduction to the avid skincare lovers who use this product in their everyday regimes. The product is also recommended for scars and stretch marks but its uses range to much more than that.
Bio-Oil is a coral shade hypoallergenic oil with a fragrance that is slightly reminiscent of lavender. The oil is non-greasy or sticky, does not clog pores and sinks into the skin easily, leaving behind a slight sheen.
I wanted for this review to be about my experience with Bio-Oil so I will not be going on about the ingredients that are in the product or the many claims that the brand makes. If you want to read more about that there are loads of places on the internet where you can find it, starting with their own website.
Using Bio-Oil
I started using Bio-Oil first on my arms and hands. As any (naughty) cat owner knows, scratches and bite marks take a while to fade and are not a pleasant accessory when they can be seen along your arms or legs.
Moreover, since I suffer from dry skin I thought that Bio-Oil would be the ideal product to help hydrate the skin. As you may be able to see from some photos I took of my progression with using Bio-Oil, the product did help the scars to fade quicker and better than if left on their own. I also made sure to use the product regularly to be able to judge if there was any improvement, week-to-week, month-to-month. Below is a before and after photo I took throughout my time using Bio-Oil to show the way my scars on my arm faded through my use of this oil.
Skin reactions
I also tried to use Bio-Oil on my face since I still have some acne scars and blemishes from when I used to get a lot of pimples on my face. Unfortunately since I have sensitive skin, I got a slight reaction from using this product; I got little bumps all over my cheeks. Having said this, I know other bloggers who use Bio-Oil as a base under their makeup and they have had no issues with it, so to each their own.
Other Uses
Bio-Oil is also an award winning product for women during their pregnancy. The oil should be applied twice daily from the start of the second trimester to areas that are prone to stretch marks. Whilst no product can totally prevent the formation of pregnancy stretch marks, Bio-Oil is an essential companion to help in their prevention. Bio-Oil has been safely used by pregnant women for the past 20 years to help prevent the formation of stretch marks by keeping the skin hydrated.
Bio-Oil is also great to use on any area on your body where you are suffering from dry and dehydrated skin, as well as cracked skin. I have loved using it on my cuticles, cracked feet, dry elbows and acne scars along my arms. I love using it right before getting into bed and it is easily absorbed into the skin.
I have also used Bio-Oil on my legs where I had some blemishes and scars and as with my arms I had very positive results, with the scars fading away nicely.
Conclusion
In conclusion I find that Bio-Oil is a multi-purpose oil that is great if you suffer from very dehydrated skin but hate that greasy residue on your skin whenever you try and make use of an oil. The scent is really pleasant and not overly-sickly sweet either. If you have overly sensitive skin, I suggest you ask for a sample at your local pharmacy to test it before purchasing, but in my case the only reaction I got was from using it on my face, the rest is fine.
You only ever need a little drop and the product goes a long way. I have been using mine for months now and I haven’t even used one quarter of it. If you are looking for a multi-use product to take care of your acne scars or stretch marks, I suggest you give Bio-Oil a go.
