Skincare Thursdays: Soothing Eye Care

When it comes to eyes and around the eyes, being gentle and using the soothing products is really important. If you have sensitive eyes, or suffer from allergies, using products that are targeted for sensitive eyes is even more important.

Lately, I have been using this product from Yves Rocher as my everyday eye cream and I find it really soothing and light around the eyes. It is the Active Sensitive Soothing Decongesting Eye Care for Sensitive Eyes. It is a light, thin cream that sinks easily in the skin around the eyes and does not leave any sticky residue behind.

I find that with eye creams, you cannot get everything in one. You cannot get anti-wrinkle, anti-puffiness, anti-dark-circles from just one product. But you should instead focus on what you need most from your eye cream on that day. This product works great for me during this time of the year when it gets too warm and my eyes are even more sensitive due to my allergies.

You get 15ml in this tube and Yves Rocher is a really good brand to look for skincare that is good for sensitive skin at an affordable price.

What is your favourite eye cream at the moment?

Essence Colour & Go in Purple Sugar

This nail polish from Essence is new to my collection. A unique shade, unlike any other I have. It is the Essence Colour & Go Nail Polish in 174 Purple Sugar

In real-life it is a tad more purple whilst in the photo the pink comes through more than it actually is.

I applied two coats of this shade but even with one the colour was very opaque. The consistency is not too liquid or gloopy. It coats the nail with a fine coat and layers great.

When going for multiple coats, I suggests thinner is better. It lasts really well on the nails as with all the other Essence polishes I have tried and it is really affordable.

Do you own any other polish that is similar? What do you think about Purple Sugar?

Cook With Me: Peach and Coconut Cupcakes

This week I baked these delicious Peach and Coconut Cupcakes which are really easy to make and do not require much time and ingredients to make. If you are a bit scared of baking, these are the cupcakes for you. No fuss and great tasting treat.

Here is what you will need:
125g unsalted butter, chopped
¾ cup desiccated coconut
1½ cup icing sugar, sifted
1¼ cup self-raising flour, sifted
1 egg, lightly beaten
4 egg whites
2 peaches, stone removed, chopped
1tsp vanilla extract

This mixture made about 14 cupcakes but it depends on the size of the cupcake cases that you use. Here is how they look like right before going in the oven.

I used these brown polka dot cupcake cases for this recipe. They are about 12cm wide.

Here is what you need to do:
1. Melt butter. Lightly beat egg, egg whites and butter.
2. Slowly add coconut, icing sugar and flour to the mixture until fully combined, add vanilla extract.
3. Fold in the peaches, gently.
4. Divide equally into cupcake cases and bake in a preheated oven at 170°C for 25 to 30 minutes or until fully cooked through.
5. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Just out of the oven, my cupcakes looked golden at the top. Mine baked for about 25 minutes but I used a knife to check the centre and once it came out clean, they were done.

This is how the cupcakes looked in the middle. The peaches were distributed in the cake. The coconut taste is not too over powering and the peach flavour comes through just slightly. They are not too sweet and great to have at breakfast or as a midnight snack before bed.

Once cooked these need to be stored in the fridge as they do not last too long, because of the fruit in the mixture. However, they will be tasty and fresh for 2 to 3 days.

What is your favourite flavour combination? Do you like peaches and coconut?

Skincare Thursdays: Dealing with Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is easily irritated and it is important to choose products that are specifically for sensitive skin that aims to calm and soothe the skin. These are my top products that I use to keep my skin calm and happy!

The La Roche Posay Toleriane Range is amazing for intolerant, sensitive skin. I an currently using the Soothing Protective Skincare at night, since it is more for dry skin, and the Toleriane Fluide for during the day and underneath makeup, as it is oil-free. These two are indispensable in my everyday routine. They are light on the skin, really gentle and have no strong fragrance to them. I am looking forward to try more products from this range as I have heard great things about their cleanser as well. I find that the French pharmacy brands are really the way to go for problematic skin. You can find these in any pharmacy which stocks La Roche Posay.

Next is the Lavera Cleansing Gel with Organic Lemon Balm and Organic Mallow. This brand uses organic and natural ingredients that give you amazing results. This cleanser is a gel that is not too foamy, which is great for people with sensitive skin as foam usually dries out the skin. It has a very relaxing scent of lemon that also helps to calm me down. I use it both day and night and have already bought my third tube of this from Holland & Barrett.

I also like to make use of serums as they really help the skin deep down. Lately, I have been using this one from Botanics called the Skin Relief Serum Ultra Calm with calming marshmallow. It is a light consistency and helps calm the skin all day. Works well under makeup or on its own when you are just chilling at home.
An important step in my routine is toning. As per recommendations from the skincare queen herself I like using toners both to exfoliate my skin but also to calm and hydrate it. This is the step you take after cleansing your skin. I love using the Roberts Rose Water which is super gentle on the skin and helps calm any redness. Just pour some onto a cotton pad and apply to the skin. Follow up with your serums and normal skincare routine.

As a summary, when dealing with sensitive skin, make sure to look out for products that specifically say ‘calming‘, ‘soothing‘ and that are for sensitive skin. Stay away from products that have a million and one ingredients and go back to basic. The less you use the more your skin will be less prone to being irritated.

POTW: Catrice in Pink Me Up!

This week’s Pink product is the Catrice Ultimate Lip Colour in 110 Pink Me Up! The Catrice Ultimate Lip Colour range gives amazing colour with a long lasting formula that is easy to wear on the lips.

This shade is great for when you want a bright, bold pop of colour on your lips. I love wearing this when I go for a simple eye look and this on the lips for a more finished look. I think this kind of colour is great all year round. Will look great both in summer with a bronzed look and in colder months with a smoky eye.

This lipstick does not dry matte on the lips but leaves a slight sheen behind that is not too glossy. It can be worn on its own for a full bold effect or else by applying over some lip balm to sheer it out. For an effortless lip I also like to apply lightly on the lips and pat in for a more sheer wash of colour that last longer.

What is your favourite go-to lip colour?

Cook With Me: Red Velvet Cupcakes

Last week I baked Red Velvet Cupcakes for the first time. I am a big Red Velvet Cake lover so when I came across this recipe for cupcakes I just had to give it a go. If you are anything like me and love sweets and baked goodies you will enjoy this recipe and hopefully also give it a go. It is super simple!

This is what you will need:
350g plain flour
2tbsp cocoa powder
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
1tsp baking powder
315g caster sugar
250ml buttermilk
185ml vegetable oil
2 eggs
3tsp red food colouring
2tsp white vinegar
1tsp vanilla extract

Since I was baking red velvet cupcakes I decided to go for pink polka dot cupcake cases.

Here’s how you do it:
1. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir in the sugar.
2. Whisk buttermilk, oil, eggs, food colouring, vanilla extract and vinegar in a jug. Add to the flour mixture slowly until well combined.
3. Line your cupcake tins with cases and divide the mixture.
4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 15 to 20 minutes.
5. Decorate with cream cheese frosting. *Optional

This mixture made 25 cupcakes but it depends on the size of your cases and how much of the mixture you put in. I know they look a scary red colour here but once they were baked, the colour was not that strong.

My cupcakes baked for about 15 to 20 minutes, but keep on checking them. Just skewer one and if it comes out clean then it’s done.

I decided to decorate mine using my favourite cream cheese frosting which is super easy to make and really tasty. Just mix cream cheese and add gradually icing sugar in a bowl until the mixture is a nice and firm but not too hard. Don’t forget to add a dash of vanilla extract too. I cut up one of the cupcakes and used is as decoration on top of the frosting.

This is how they turned out on the inside! Once you decorate them, store in the fridge or they will be ruined.

Hope you enjoyed this recipe and let me know if you enjoy foodie posts!

What I’m Loving: June 2014

For my June Favourites I have a mixture of items that I have been loving. Since it was also exam month, the beauty products are mostly limited to skin care, but in the mix there is also a book and food.

Starting off from what I have been loving most the past month, is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I had already read this book months ago but since the movie just came out last month I had to go through it again. I have yet to go watch the movie but the book is really amazing. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry and all the other emotions in between!

My next is a perfume, The Body Shop Atlas Mountain Rose Eau de Toilette. I have just rediscovered this scent which has been repackaged since I last had it. It is a light, sweet, floral scent that is not too heavy and works both for during the day and at night. I find it is perfect for Summer time and the scent lingers on the skin for a long time.

Another beauty product that I have been loving this past month is the Rituals Creamy Foam Cleanser with lotus flower and moringa extract. This gentle cleanser works well for dry, irritated skin and smells heavenly. For my irritated skin I also like to use products which have zinc in them. I really want to try the La Roche Posay SeroZinc face spray but in-lieu of it, or rather in its absence of this product in Malta, I found the Uriage Anti-irritation spray. I use this as a toner or as a refreshing spray when my skin is feeling particularly dehydrated or irritated and it really helps to soothe it.

Another skin care item which I love to use when I am a bit in a hurry but want a bit of a treat, is the Decleor Flash Radiance Mask. This is a gel-like texture mask that is full of enzymes and helps your skin look radiance and healthier in a matter of minutes.

The next item I have been loving, I have been using at the end of June but I have been loving it, and it’s an Organiser. I am not much good usually to write down things but I have been finding this cute organiser which was a gift from my cousin to be really wonderful to jot down ideas for blog posts and to keep track of what I need to do.

Lastly, this month I had pancakes for the first time, prepared by my boyfriends mum and thickly spread with Nutella by my boyfriend 😀 If you have never had them, what are you waiting for? They are delicious!!
